Once having made the decision to adopt a pet, the health and well being of the new family member should be treated as it would any other member of the family.
Pets can not speak so if there is any doubt as to the ability to fulfill the commitment to the pet, it would be best to not begin the relationship. Pets don’t like change so having a dog or cat as part of the family for 10 years and THEN deciding you no longer want that responsibility is both cruel and mentally devastating to the pet who has remained a faithful companion for so many years.
